Since its inception, the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute has supported I Look Like a Cardiologist. UPMC physician mentors are all UPMC attending physicians, fellows, or residents and their experience in becoming cardiologists have informed this program. physician mentors.
Who should apply?
The UPMC chapter of I Look Like a Cardiologist seeks to mentor students who are:
- 10th-12th grades
- academic achievers
- from a background underrepresented in cardiology such as being female, African-American/Black, Latino/Latina/LatinX, LGBTQIA, future first generation college student, economically disadvantaged, or a foster youth
- from central or western Pennsylvania (within a 30-minute drive to a UPMC hospital)
- available for all 4 online mentoring sessions and able to get to the main UPMC campus in Oakland on a Saturday morning

Katie Berlacher, M.D., M.S., Program Founder
Katie Berlacher is a practicing physician educator at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Berlacher runs the cardiology fellowship program for UPMC and is passionate about supporting young women who are interested in a career in medicine. Dr. Berlacher earned her undergraduate degree at Duke, attended medical school at Ohio State, and completed her residency, fellowship, and a Master of Science degree in medical education at the University of Pittsburgh.
